‘Truth is stranger than fiction’ DR.SEBI

Born Alfredo Bowman on Nov. 26, 1933, in Honduras, Dr. Sebi came to the United States as a self-educated man who was diagnosed with asthma, diabetes, impotence, and obesity.

After unsuccessful treatments with conventional doctors and traditional Western medicine, Sebi was led to an herbalist in Mexico. Finding great healing success from all his ailments, he began creating natural vegetation, “Cell-food” compounds geared for inter-cellular cleansing and revitalization.

Carefully studying herbs in North America, South America, Africa, and the Caribbean, Sebi developed a unique methodology to healing the human body with herbs that are firmly rooted in over 30 years of research and experience.

He rose to cult-like fame pushing a simple dietary premise that food is alkaline for the body, and dead food kills the body’s natural ability to heal and regenerate.

He believed that an alkaline diet can cure any disease and he created self-food products to treat people. His roster of clients included John Travolta, Steven Segal, Eddie Murphy, Teddy Pendergrass, Lisa “left eye” Lopez (of the group TLC), and Michael Jackson.

Despite these noted celebrities, many people considered Sebi a “quack” who was no more a doctor than Dr. Pepper. Nevertheless, Sebi’s myth grew stronger in 1987 after the self-taught herbalist ran ads in the Amsterdam News, the Village Voice, and the New York Post newspapers claiming that he had a cure for AIDS, HIV, diabetes, herpes, paralysis, and several other diseases. This did not go over well with New York Attorney General Robert Abrams who ordered him to remove the ads.

Sebi refused and was soon arrested on charges of practicing medicine without a license, selling products not approved by the FDA, and fraudulently claiming that he could cure AIDS and other diseases.

On Feb. 10, 1987, detectives arrested Dr. Sebi in his New York office. “Everybody in my office was crying,” Sebi said, “but not me, I was happy.

“I had the diagnostic sheets of everyone that I had cured showing their medical diagnosis from American doctors from credible American medical schools. I also had written statements from not one, but two independent doctors verifying that the patient’s disease no longer existed.”

“No one else had ever made those claims,” Sebi said. “The man (Robert Abrams) had a right to arrest me, but he was making a mistake.

“When I went in front of the judge, I asked three questions. Your Honor, is it a fact that the Holy Bible teaches that herbs are for the healing of the nations?”

The judge replied yes.

“Your Honor,” asked Sebi, “is it a fact that science shows that the human body is carbon-based and the complement to a carbon base body must have a carbon-based substance to complement it because the body only accepts a substance through chemical affinity?” The judge agreed.

“Your Honor,” said Sebi, “is it a fact that the so-called father of medicine, Hippocrates, cured every disease known to man?” The judge answered in the affirmative.

“Did he use herbs or chemicals?”

“Herbs,” she replied.

During the trial Sebi shocked the court when he asserted there was only one disease – not two, and not three, but one.

“Could you substantiate that?’’ asked the judge.

“When someone has sinusitis, what is obstructing in the nasal passage?” Sebi asked. “Mucus,” replied the judge.

“And when another has bronchitis,” Sebi queried, “what’s obstructing the bronchial tubes?”

“Mucus,” she replied.

“And when another has pneumonia, what’s covering the walls of the lungs?” Sebi asked

“Mucus,” relied the judge.

Just then, the prosecutor jumped up and blurted, “what about AIDS? You and your one disease theory, what about AIDS?

“I am the last person on earth to believe in theory,” Sebi countered. “I do not lend myself to theories or philosophy. Either I know something or I don’t.”

“Your Honor, have you ever been to an AIDS ward?” Sebi asked,

“What is it that AIDS patients spit up practically every 5 minutes?

“Mucus,” she sharply replied, “but where is the mucus?”

“It’s in the skin, the blood, and the lymphatic system,” he said.

Still not convinced, the judge demanded Sebi bring to court one of each of his patients who could testify that he or she had been cured by Dr. Sebi of these fatal diseases. Dr. Sebi brought in 77 patients.

After hearing the heartfelt testimonies of each of them, the jury found Sebi not guilty. Prior to Sebi’s triumphant acquittal, there were 2,781 cases that came before the New York Supreme Court on fraudulent medical claims – all ending with a verdict of guilty.

Before Nipsey Hussle’s untimely death, he announced he was working on a documentary film about the alternative health guru and traditional healer.

On May 28, 2016, Dr. Sebi was arrested in Honduras for carrying $37,000 in cash. He was released pending a court hearing, only to be re-arrested on June 3 by Honduran authorities and charged with money laundering. Sebi remained in custody until Aug. 6, when he was rushed to a local hospital reportedly suffering from complications of pneumonia. He died in route. Sebi was 82 years old.

Today, many believe that Dr. Sebi was a threat to the multi-billion-dollar medical industry. They believe Sebi’s death was not an accident that his arrest and eventual death stem from the fact that if his career was correct, he would have bankrupted the medical community. They claim “there’s no money in cures, but there’s money in sickness.”

Much of what Dr. Sebi espoused about health and diet has been echoed by the American Heart Association and other credible medical groups who’ve urged Americans to eat more fresh fruit and vegetables and less processed foods.

Still, there’s a plethora of internet chatter about the demise of Sebi and Hussle. With Sebi being such a social media sensation, undoubtedly there will be at least one documentary/movie made about his life. When it is finally released, keep in mind the old proverb – “Truth is stranger than fiction.”
